  • Responsibilities

    Our client is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This individual will play a key role in our Robotic and Automated Systems Engineering Team reporting to the Director of Operations.

     

    The essential job functions for this position are:

    • Lead Engineer for the mechanical design of machinery, equipment, and tooling primarily for automotive painting and sealing automation
    • Manage the activities of a small team of engineers to:
      • Balance work load, training, time and attendance
      • Manage fabrication and external design sources
      • Manage and control engineering budgets
      • Insure proper work flow, scheduling, and approvals
      • Provide technical leadership and training
      • Write specifications as required for projects
    • General spokesperson for mechanical engineering activities
    • Actively engage in engineering designs and ensure a system of error proofing
    • Check and approve the designs of all mechanical engineers prior to engineering release
    • Follows all active projects and help resolve technical issues as they arise
    • Work with quoting personnel to provide technical details and estimates for future projects
    • Occasional travel to customer locations for meetings, field checking, problem-solving or to assist on projects during critical times
    • Create or revise mechanical designs required to meet customer expectations
      • Assist with determining project scope based on customer requirements
      • Determine mechanical, structural, hydraulic and/or pneumatic designs based on project requirements
      • Use 2D and 3D CAD software to create drawing packages for project designs
      • Perform cost analysis for new or existing designs
      • Create/maintain and release data/drawings and engineering documentation
      • Work with manufacturing personnel to insure manufacturability of product
      • Work with purchasing staff to order project materials
      • Create bill of materials for each mechanical assembly
      • Support shop and field technicians to ensure that equipment is assembled and installed correctly
      • Update drawings based on “as built” markups from field personnel

    Qualifications

    Candidates for this position must possess all of the following qualifications:

    • Minimum 8 years’ experience in manufacturing/engineering environment
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the mechanical design of robotic or automated system
    • 2+ years of experience working with robot installations
    • Strong ability to identify issues and problems, generate solutions and choose appropriate alternatives using root cause analysis; resourcefulness
    • Strong mechanical skills; ability to read and develop pneumatic/fluid schematics and diagrams
    • Hands-on experienced with mechanical equipment; measurement tools and techniques
    • Proficient using 2D / 3D AutoDesk products to generate mechanical system packages
    • Proficient at creating/revising drawings - AutoCAD or hand markups, layouts or verbal instruction
    • Understanding of international standards (RIA/ANSI, IEC, ISO, NFPA, NEC, UL)
    • Knowledge of metal and non-ferrous materials and their properties
    • Knowledge of U.S. Customary system (inches) and SI system (Metric)
    • Knowledge of various ANSI and ISO Engineering and drafting standards
    • Able to select raw material, calculate weight and volume
    • Perform other calculations, i.e. center of gravity, bend and stress moments
    • Ensure mechanical fit of all components in a given assembly
    • Possess a solid understanding of design concepts, practices & procedures
    • Ability to multitask by handling diverse assignments concurrently in a demanding environment
    • Work well independently or be a team leader, positive attitude; committed to delivery of tasks
    • Must be willing to work in a team-oriented, matrixed managed type organization
    • Project tasks completed on schedule and under budget, to specifications and checked for accuracy
    • Knowledge in mechanical designs for robotic automation systems 
    • Excellent oral and written communications
    • Willingness to travel

     

    Education

    • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Work Experience

     


    Preferred Qualifications

    • The following skills are desired, but not required:
    • Experience with industrial systems, specifically Paint / Sealer and Automation applications
    • Experience with engineering retrofit systems
    • Experience working on new product developments
    • Extensive design of automation systems using FANUC robots
    • Understanding of automotive OEM standards and specifications
    • Advanced training, knowledge, and awareness in Automated Systems and Robot Applications
    • Strong understanding of paint application technology and hazardous locations (Class 1, Div 1)
